Callac - The Town

Our Town of Callac – Just a short 'trot ' away

Callac is named after the Gallo Roman settlement which was originally at the site - Kal which iscallc town old Celtic for rock.

The village is quiet but active and friendly.  As many local French farmers have chosen to retire to the area it is still one of the few places that you can still hear Breton being spoken.

Callac is most known for the birth place of the 'Breton Spaniel' which was originally a cross between a Scottish Setter and a Coalman, a local Breton dog.

Callac has a large church, an imposing hall, vast spaces, a cinema, and of course shops and bars,

  • Shopping
    • There is a market in Callac every Wednesday morning.  Broons also has a small grocery store, two bakeries, two butchers, a tabac, a hardware store and a clothes shop.  For all other groceries there is a Casino and an Intermarche supermarket in the town.

    • Tourism

Callac has three hotels and a town campsite.  There are also lots of Gite and Chambre d’Hotes accommodation options in the area.

Callac's nearest 'sea' beach is just 35 km away at Plestin Les Greves.  The village holds regular one off events such as fetes and a Fest Noz throughout the year.

The village is home to a unique museum 'Maison de l'Epagneul Breton' which brings to life the history of the Breton Spaniel through art, video and historic artefacts.

      It is worth having a walk around Callac passing the following places of interest;

      • Ruins of the Botmel Chapel which was the original ancient parish church

      • The Naous Statue which commemorates a horse famous in the 1940s for its physical attributes

    • Here we have the highest concentration of otters in France, with a density of 30 individuals per 100 km2. The municipality has also installed Callac last year a "holt" for the otters to breed in . This holt has now been used by a family of otters.

    The land of Brittany spaniels

The breed of Brittany spaniels was started here at the beginning of the century, when Joseph Patin created the race from a setter and a "dog of coal" as he called it. Since then, Callac remaines the center of Brittany spaniels. In view of this Callac opened a museum for this breed in the center of the town.

    The Church of Bulat

    P. To thank the Virgin , the lord of Pestivien in 1530 built the magnificent church of Bulat, about 100 metres north of Callac.

    • The building, with the arrow on top of a massive tower rises to 66 meters, is one of the finest, and oldest of the Renaissance in Brittany. One can admire a particularly beautiful flamboyant porch, many statues of saints, a frieze of Death grimacing faces and emaciated carved in stone and, inside, other statues, including the amazing peasant lectern.
